Being able to tell your story in an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance is a rare experience in this world where the importance of an individual's life is undervalued. The American Historical Association promotes historical work and the importance of historical thinking in public life. Listening is truly an act of love and unconditional acceptance comes from listening with your heart and mind open to whatever you might hear without judgment. Richter understood that the cleaning industry needed. The very fact that we listen with an uncritical ear to each other’s story allows for a feeling of acceptance and connection not usually felt in everyday life. This was the basic vision of Alfred Richter, who founded the National Sanitary Supply Association in 1923. Later that evening when I was reading the responses on the feedback forms I had distributed I started thinking about what could have made the class seem so peaceful, then, it dawned on me. Hearing that she had felt the class had been peaceful was not something I had expected to hear or had I designed the class to feel peaceful but I was happy she had felt that way about her experience. When the class was over and we were saying our goodbyes - giving and receiving hugs, I heard one of the members say how peaceful this class feels. I facilitate a life writing workshop at a local senior center and at the end of my last session I asked the group to give me some feedback on how they felt about the class as well as suggestions they might have for the future to improve their experience.
